What is a test basis?

The test basis is the information you need in order to start the test analysis and create your test cases. If you're lucky, there may be a well written and detailed specification document that you can start with. Ideally you get a document describing all use cases including their preconditions, basic flow and exceptions.

Don't think you'll always get this much. You might as well get lots of different documents, all contradicting each other. In some cases there's even no specification document at all. You might get only an old version of the application which you need to explore yourself to learn the functionality.

Possible test bases are:
  • Requirements
  • Functional design
  • Technical design
  • User manual
  • Use cases
  • Source code
  • Business experts
